Veterans: Frequently Asked Questions

I am down on my luck and having some having some financial problems. Can you help me?

The Foundation only funds 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, not individuals. If you are a veteran looking for direct assistance in transitioning into civilian life, we recommend contacting Illinois Joining Forces, a network of Illinois organizations ready to connect you to the right resources.
What do you fund?

Our grantmaking focuses on three areas: employment, behavioral health, and navigation of veteran resources. For additional information, see our grantmaking guidelines. A grants list is also available online.

Do I have to be a Chicago-based organization to apply?
No. While we are increasingly investing in Chicago- and Illinois-related projects, we will consider non-Chicago applicants that can make a strong case for how their proposed idea will impact Chicago and Illinois veterans.

We are a grantee of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation in another area (i.e. Civics, Communities). Can we still apply to the Veterans Program?
Yes. The McCormick Foundation already partners with select organizations that meet the guidelines in more than one program area, so this is certainly possible.

Can I request multi-year funding?
Yes, however, most grants will be for one-year of funding.

How does my organization apply for a grant?
The Veterans Program is a proactive grantmaking program by which grantees are solicited through a request for proposals (RFP) process. At the present time, there is no active RFP. However, we will be accepting Letters of Inquiry (LOI) throughout the year.

What is the timeline for vetting a grant request under $50,000?

We vet requests under $50,000 throughout the year, typically in March, July and November. Requests are usually reviewed and approved/declined within a three-month period and the funding will be released shortly thereafter.

When will I hear back about my application for a proposal of more than $50,000?
If your LOI is selected for funding consideration, we will contact you by mid-June to submit a full proposal. If you are not selected, you will be notified by letter or email. Grant recipients will be notified in September and will receive funding in November.
