Program Outcomes

While recognizing that literacy is a vast issue area and could take on a myriad of strategies to help people succeed academically,  our Program Officers analyze the following outcomes, which were informed by feedback from direct service providers and issue area experts, as a sign of quality services.
The list below is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all outcomes tracked by service providers however are important factors used to evaluate a grant application.
  • Literacy and math level gains measured by pre- and post-tests
  • Program retention and completion rates
  • Percentage of Bridge program learners who achieve 8th and 9th grade reading level goals
  • Transition of Bridge program graduates to workforce certificate-based training programs, GED prep classes, or post-secondary education classes
  • Percentage of Pre-Bridge program learners who achieve 6.0 grade reading level goals
  • Transition of Pre-Bridge program graduates to Bridge programs, or other education/ vocational training programs

The objectives of our Literacy issue area are to support modified (workforce-enhanced) Adult Basic Education (ABE), and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs that help low income adults raise their English proficiency and reading levels to meet eligibility requirements for job training, high school equivalency GED classes, and/or post-secondary education programs.

Eligible Programs

Bridge Programs: Serves adults with reading and/or math skills between the 6th and 9th grade levels with a contextualized curriculum that is tied to a specific job/career field (i.e. health, information technology, energy sector, construction trades and manufacturing). This module-based program requires credentialed instructors and strategic partnerships for social services, career readiness and post-secondary education needs
Pre-Bridge Programs: Serves adults with reading and/or math skills below 6th grade level with a literacy curriculum which integrates general workforce content and requires credentialed instructors and internal/external provision of services addressing needs of learners
Advocacy/Technical Assistance: Advocacy efforts to secure additional resources, promote systemic change, and/or provide training for agency staff
