The Freedom Express traveling museum is available - at no charge - to visit schools that serve 6th-12th grade students in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will Counties. For questions about the Freedom Express, please email us at FreedomExpress@McCormickFoundation.org.
Currently, we are taking requests for fall 2013 and spring 2014. Click here to sign up for reminder emails about Freedom Express registration openings and other Civics Program offerings.
Our staff requires a complete and accurate request form - including the visit schedule and parking location description - to plan the logistics of each visit. School Request Forms must include all class information (i.e., instructor/chaperone names and email addresses, class subjects, sizes, and grade levels). Incomplete forms and forms with errors will be returned via email, and no dates can be held until we receive a complete and accurate form.
Please follow the links in the steps below to request a school visit:
Scheduling & Site Considerations
Read all considerations listed below to ensure that your school will be able to host the Freedom Express. The vehicle's dimensions do not permit us to travel to some locations.
Review this calendar to determine your first, second and third choice dates. These must be added to the School Request Form. Please note that visits must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance of the requested date(s).
School Request Form.*
Starting October 1, 2013, we are using a new PDF form to collect registration information.
Download, save to your hard drive, complete and submit this school request form. Please allow a total of 10 business days to process your request. You will receive confirmation materials via email, thus it is important for you to check email regularly until you receive this confirmation. Note that your visit is not confirmed until you receive these materials.
*We recommend downloading the latest version of Adobe Reader.
Only School Request Forms completed in their entirety will be processed. Incomplete forms will be returned via email.
Visits must be scheduled three weeks in advance of the requested date(s). If the three-week deadline has passed, our staff can make exceptions on a case by case basis. Please contact the Freedom Express staff at FreedomExpress@McCormickFoundation.org to inquire about scheduling a visit in less than three weeks.
Before submitting a request, a teacher or administrator must agree to serve as a School Host Coordinator. The coordinator manages various responsibilities associated with a visit, including submitting the request form, making parking arrangements for the vehicle, and coordinating logistics with Freedom Express staff. This person must have access to and regularly check his/her email account.
Please take our dimensions into consideration when filling out the 'Proposed Parking Site' section of the School Request Form
The Freedom Express requires a legal, level parking space that is at least 55' long, 25' wide, and 14' high and can accommodate 36,500 pounds in weight. The vehicle occupies 6-8 standard parking spaces.
Adequate space is required to maneuver the Freedom Express into and out of the designated parking space.
The School Host Coordinator is responsible for securing any necessary permits and/or permissions to park the Freedom Express on property, public or otherwise, not owned by the school.
The Freedom Express is equipped with a wheelchair lift and must therefore be parked on a level surface. The School Request Form provides details.
If available at the event site, the Freedom Express can plug into shore power (50A/240V). The request form provides details.
If you must cancel a visit, please notify us as soon as possible. However, in the event there is an emergency within 24 hours of the scheduled visit and a last-minute cancellation is necessary, please contact us using the staff contact information provided in your confirmation letter.
It may be necessary for the McCormick Foundation to cancel or shorten a visit due to mechanical problems, a staff emergency, or hazardous weather conditions. (Hazardous weather conditions include severe thunderstorms, lightning, tornado risk, high winds, heavy snow/blizzard conditions and extreme heat or cold.) In the event this is necessary, we will contact you using the “event day contact number” you provide on the request form.
